In 2009 Edinburgh Zoo was looking for a cost effective way to showcase their Gentoo penguins nesting. In June we set up a test webcam campaign to trial the success that this type of exposure could bring in terms of visitors numbers.
We were confident in the success of the campaign due to the nature of footage that would be viewed. Penguins nesting are compelling to watch because they become competitive and protective, often fighting over stones for their nests. This was of course then followed by the chicks hatching and running around demanding food!
The campaign provided the zoo with 9,000 visitors a month and even generated a huge Twitter campaign. The initial trial was such a success that Edinburgh Zoo have now made the camera a permanent feature and are looking at installing more cameras in 2010.
"The penguin cam has been a great success. A lot of our visitors go online before they come to the zoo, and this is actually increasing footfall."
"Because of the success of this campaign we are now talking to fiNETra about utilising more cameras within other enclosures."
